ENGLISH BIO:
Founded in 2006, The Sessions Voices are one of the most renowned vocal ensembles of Italy.
They take their name after Bruce Springsteen’s album The Seeger Sessions, since their first concert took place at a lecture on American Folk Music when Springsteen was touring Italy in 2006.
In 2011 they published their first CD, Songs of Freedom, a collection of protest songs with a strong connection to the Civil Rights Movement.

In 2015 TSV published their first original single, “Graces (Dropping Again)” written by ZogaroS. The video directed by Marzia Mete and produced by the SAME same factory was entirely filmed in Umbria, Italy.

In 2017 TSV released Tender You Back, a concept album of 16 songs and vocal interludes composed and produced by all the girls. “Broken Dream”, written by Chiara Cortez and Emanuele Jorma Gasperi, is the first single published to launch the record. The video directed by Riccardo Riande features handmade hats made in Italy by the young designers of Superduper Hats

SONGS OF FREEDOM OFFICIAL VIDEOS

The 1st official video Jacob’s Ladder (edited by Daphne Nisi), was published on TSV’s Youtube Channel in June 2012.

It was followed by Blackbird, co-written by ZogaroS and Andrea Nevi, a heartfelt homage to the Civil Rights Movement and its heritage. The video traveled to several international film festivals and competitions in Italy, Canada, USA, and Hungary.

Mahk Jchi, co-written by ZogaroS & Matteo Duranti and filmed in their native Umbria, is instead a tribute to the people who first inhabited the territories we now call America and to the spiritual world and connection they had with nature and the Ancestors.

Blowin’ In The Wind, a song that appears in the repackaging of Songs of Freedom, was filmed by Emiliano Martino and edited by him and Daphne Nisi.

The last single taken from “Songs of Freedom” was Motherless Child, directed by Marzia Mete and produced by the SAME same Factory. In the video one can see some pictures of the Door of No Return in Senegal, as Motherless Child is one of the most ancient spirituals ever notated.

 

PRESENTAZIONE ITALIANA:
Formatosi nel 2006 grazie ad una fortunata serie di circostanze per sostenere un esame sulla musica popolare statunitense, “The Sessions Voices” è un gruppo vocale tutto al femminile.

L’intento del gruppo è quello di riproporre lo spirito più vero della musica popolare americana, sia essa folk, blues o spiritual; uno spirito vigile e democratico in cui risuonano l’anima, la vicinanza e la protesta di tutte le componenti culturali ed etniche che abitano i territori delle Americhe.

Lo spettacolo è caratterizzato da arrangiamenti che si ispirano ai più svariati stili musicali, volti ad evidenziare le diverse personalità vocali delle otto interpreti, che si uniscono per dare vita a un particolare e personalissimo stile esecutivo.

Ma a contraddistinguere “The Sessions Voices” è soprattutto il loro approccio alla concezione di performance, ispirata in gran parte alla cultura afro-americana: far rivivere a chi le ascolta gli spiriti e le storie popolari, non solo attraverso la voce,ma anche con il corpo, coinvolgendo il pubblico in una sorta di rito atavico, dove la musica non solo si esegue, ma soprattutto si vive.

Negli anni “The Sessions Voices” hanno collaborato con Ascanio Celestini, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Alessandro Portelli, la Woody Guthrie Foundation, il movimento Contro Tutti i Razzismi e la comunita’ ebraica di Roma per la Giornata della Memoria. Hanno aperto un concerto di Mud Morgenfield e sono state invitate a partecipare a due edizioni del Varese Gospel Festival.

Nel 2012 hanno suonato nella prestigiosa cornice di Piazza di Spagna all’interno del Roma Gospel Festival e sono state invitate a cantare il giorno di Natale e Capodanno nel programma UnoMattina su RAI 1. Nel 2013 Alessio Bertallot ha trasmesso il singolo Blackbird su Radio 2 Rai nel suo programma Raitunes.

Nel dicembre 2011 e’ uscito il primo CD “Songs of Freedom”, totalmente autoprodotto. Accanto a rivisitazioni di brani della tradizione folk e spiritual statunitense, il disco propone anche personali riletture di classici come Blackbird dei Beatles e God Bless The Child di Billie Holiday, oltre ad un brano originale del gruppo.

Nel Luglio 2013 TSV sono rientrate in studio per registrare il loro primo disco di brani originali presso lo studio “Gli Artigiani” di Roma.
